PROSHIKA is a development organization but since its inception in 1976 it has given top priority to environmental protection and natural regeneration through involving the organized poor people. PROSHIKA believes that people can contribute to natural protection through afforestation when properly motivated and assisted under benefit sharing mechanism. PROSHIKA’s social forestry activities are directed towards poverty alleviation
through a comprehensive approach in implementation strategies. This paper is highlighted on the plantation activities of PROSHIKA from 1991 to 2001 through benefit sharing mechanism. PROSHIKA planted about 5.9 million seedlings with active participation of 4291 organized groups (20 persons on average) in this period. The seedlings are planted in roadside like, feeder roads and highways, embankment, railways and private land. From 2002 after completing the rotation period, trees are sold and sale cash are distributed among the beneficiaries according to benefit sharing mechanism. From 2005-2010, about BDT 94.3 million is distributed among 14678 beneficiaries and BDT 33.7 million are distributed among road authorities. This will also contributed to address deforestation and climate change issue in country.
