t is of grave concern that the syndrome of poverty in old age in Lesotho, South Africa and Zimbabwe continues in spite of the existence of formal social security provisions in these countries. The solution to this problem lies in transforming the existing social security schemes in order to ensure broad-based coverage of older persons.
