Abstract | This paper is divided into two sections. First, it looks at the general demographic scenario in Pakistan. Second, it reviews the history of Pakistan’s population policy programs. In both cases, comparisons are made with Bangladesh and Iran. These are two predominantly Muslim countries that only a few decades ago had fertility rates as high as Pakistan’s, yet in recent years have reduced their fertility substantially through effective family planning programs, leaving Pakistan much behind. |
