Abstract
Labour recruitment for the South African mines has recently been reduced in Botswana. This paper seeks to highlight some of the consequences of this reduction in terms of the changing pattern and organisation of recruitment in Botswana and its impact upon employment opportunities and dependence on migrant earnings. The impact of declining recruitment is shown to have increasingly severe consequences as the scale of analysis changes from national to regional down to the individual household level.
