This article will provide a brief overview of gender
based violence (domestic violence and sexual
assaults) in Timor Leste.It will discuss the existence of
plural systems of law,noting that both the local justice
system and the state justice system fail to adequately
deal with gender based violence. It examines
responses to gender based violence and concludes by
noting the main challenges international police actors
working in Timor Leste may face.
