The study was conducted in Sheikan Locality, North Kordofan State. It aimed to investigate the role
of some cultural aspects in forest resources utilization and conservation with emphasis to indigenous
knowledge and religion. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaires, focus group
discussions and personal observations. Two sites; El Ain Natural Reserved Forest and the belt area
around Elobeid town were intentionally chosen to form the upper stage, followed by selection of
villages and finally target respondents were determined. The study covered six villages where 36
randomly selected respondents were interviewed. Descriptive statistics and relevant techniques were
used for data analysis and presentation of results. The findings revealed that indigenous knowledge,
which depends on cultural backgrounds and needs of local people, has a vital role in forest resource
utilization. The role of religion in forest resource utilization could be proved by what is locally known
as Toggaba. On the other hand, obvious religious instructions encouraging transplanting and
protection of Salvadora persica and other edible tree species could be considered as constructive
indicators to resource conservation. With respect to gender concern, nomadic women were very much
dedicated to forest utilization; such women were reported to have no motivation towards other
forestry activities. Migrant women were found to contribute partially to all forestry activities;
however resident women were largely involved in forest resource utilization and conservation.
Empirical results confirmed that forest utilization and conservation activities are mostly influenced by
indigenous knowledge and religious background of people in the area. Further investigation of very
complex and diverse cultural issues is recommended.
