Abstract
The role of medium cities in the urban hierarchy has functional significance because of spatial communication of
city - periphery, the population maintenance, support services and social - economical interactions. To deal with these issues,
identifying indicators of sustainable development in medium cities is necessary for their geographical, social, economic and
physical sustainability. This study is practical and its method is descriptive - analytic. Statistical population is Guilan province
and the sample size was calculated according to Morgan table about 384person. The research is based on two main hypotheses:
A: It seems that there is a significant relationship between medium cities trend to effective indicators of urban sustainable
development and the components of the physical form of the city, economic variables, housing and social factors. B: It seems
that there is a significant relationship between medium cities trend to effective indicators of urban sustainable development and
the transport, operational, legal and environmental factors. Data analysis is using descriptive and inferential statistics and the
Spearman test. The findings reveal that the there is no significant relationship between medium cities trend to effective
indicators of urban sustainable development and the components of the physical form of the city (3 variables), Economic and
Housing (7 variables), social (9 variables), transport (4 variables), environmental (8 variables) and operational and legal (6
variables). These findings show the need for goal setting, planning and preparation the short term, medium term and long term
plans to promote sustainable development indicators in the medium cities.
