Abstract
This paper analyses the impact of the 2010 Haiti earthquake on the household
decision about children’s time allocation. We count with a separated
measure of the geographical variation of the earthquake magnitude and
one of its damage at household-level that allow us to estimate the causal
impact of household’s vulnerability on the decision about the time allocation
of 10-17 years old children. In addition to analyze the effect on
schooling and leisure, we are able to disentangle the effect on market
work and household chores activities. We also count with children selfreported
data, which potentially reduces measurement error. Our results
suggest that vulnerability at the time of the earthquake is associated to
lower investments in children’s human capital, which therefore, perpetuates
household’s poverty.
