Kenya?s gross domestic product (GDP) grew at an annual average of 6.6
percent from 1963 to 1973. Between 1974 and 1990, however, Kenya?s
economic performance declined. From 1991 to 1993, Kenya had its worst
economic performance since independence. From 1994-96, Kenya?s real GDP
growth rate averaged just over 4 percent a year. Its economic growth rate
declined from 1.4 percent in 1998 to a negative 0.3 percent in 2001. In 2000,
GDP growth was negative, but improved slightly in 2001. Economic growth
continued to improve slightly in 2002 and reached 1.4 percent in 2003; it was
4.3 percent in 2004, 5.8 percent in 2005 and 6.4 in 2006 (Table 1). However,
this growth was not maintained in 2008 due to the post election violence after
the December 2007 elections.
