Abstract
Objective The paper addresses the issue pertaining to the attitudes of friends ,relatives and neigh?
bours to people living with HIV /AIDS and the implication this will have for infection and spread of HIV /AIDS in
Lagos State,Nigeria. Methods Data for the study were obtained from a survey conducted between August and Sep ?
tember,2004 in Lagos state. The study reveals that:(i) among people living with HIV /AIDS in Lagos State,66 per?
cent of female and 44 percent of male were in age group 21 ~40 years;(ii) most of the people living with HIV /
AIDS got to know about their seropositive status at the health facilities when they were sick and some when they had
tuberculosis;(iii) many of those infected and affected by HIV /ADS have been stigmatised and there is tendency for
them to hide their HIV /AIDS identity. Results and conclusion The results therefore highlighted the need for proper
education on stigma and discrimination regarding HIV /AIDS and people living with HIV /AIDS.Apart from targeting
people who are not infected with the virus in order to prevent them from becoming infected alone ,people living with
HIV/AIDS should also be exposed to information and education on how to access medical services and drug provi ?
sion and on how to find appropriate emotional and practical support and help .
