Millet is an important cereal crop grown and consumed in the drier region of Nigeria. The
aim of this study is to assess the profitability and factors affecting the output of millet farmers
in Gammawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State. Primary data were obtained through
the use of structured questionnaire administered randomly on ninety millet farmers. The data
were subjected to descriptive, gross margin and multiple regression analyses. The results
show that millet production is a viable enterprise in the study area. The average cost per
hectare is N8,776.69 while the average gross income per hectare is N18,920. Multiple
regression analysis reveals that farm size, amount spent on hired labour and family labour
(man day) are the significant factors affecting the millet farmers' output in the study area.
The coefficient of determination (R2
) shows that these variables accounted for 88% of the
variations in the output of milletfarmers. Problems/acing millet farmers in the area include
high cost of farm inputs, shortage of labour and poor extension services. Appropriate
recommendations were given towards empowering the millet farmers for higher output.
