Geographic Information System (GIS) uses computer hardware and software to
capture,integrate, map and analyse spatial data.This paper demostrates the ability
to convey and accurately report data on child labour activities using GIS. It
integrates spatial and social data to map the spatial distribution of child labourers,
factors that influence the pattern and the location of child labour spots in Surulere
Local Government Area in Lagos. The result of this research shows that child
labour is a significant problem in the study area with high number of children
involve in hawking, working as shop attendants and scavenging. Different road
junctions and markets are identified as the spots of child labour activities. Among
the different wards in the study area,Orile Iganmu has the highest number of child
labourers because of its location along the Lagos Badagry expressway. This
research therefore makes available significant information for local, state and
federal government, child protective services, NGO’s and community- based
agencies. This information is useful for effective preventive services that will
minimise the number of working children in the study area.The maps can be used as
a virtual tool to identify and target the wards in study area where high number of
children are involved in child labour activities.
