Abstract
The emerging roles and responsibilities of the society in ensuring food
security in Nigeria was examined. The past and present contributions
towards ensuring food security in the country as well as the objectives of
food security were also examined. The problems of food security were
also dealt with. Recommendations, which included thorough assessment
of existing problems, analysis of their causes as well as resources
required to improve the situation were made. Others include appropriate
monitoring of food conditions at interval so as to refine food policies
and programmes, establishment of other sources of data other than that
of the ministries, a market economy driven policy incase of fertilizer
sales and distribution and rural and community-based food security
programme were recommended.
