This study examined the sanitation in selected secondary schools students with regard to faecal waste
management. Few studies have captured faecal waste management problems in Nigerian educational
institutions, particularly the views of students. Using a structured, self-administered questionnaire, 150 students
were surveyed from four secondary schools in Akure the capital of Ondo State. Data collected were subjected to
statistical analysis and was presented in percentages and frequencies. Findings from secondary school students
sampled revealed that they do not meet the minimum standard of 1:20 toilet and student/staff ratio, and that
solid wastes were not properly managed constituting problems on their school compounds. Recommendations
made include the fact that government should provide good and adequate number of toilets in schools;
government should match policies with action; there should be proper monitoring and evaluation of
toilet/students in the light of persistent increase in student intake and maintenance of adequate distance between
classrooms and toilet facilities coupled with adequate provision of water.
