There have been claims that despite national and local development efforts, rural areas in Ghana have not
seen significant development. More specifically, the Builsa North District, a predominantly rural district in the northern
Ghana is perceived to be characterized by low agricultural productivity, poor infrastructure, under developed enterprises
and inadequate social protection interventions. These issues are of significant implications for development policy and are
worth investigating in studies. Using a case study design and an evaluation research approach, this study appraised the
Builsa North District’s implemented agricultural, infrastructural and enterprises development strategies as well as social
protection interventions. The various rural development strategies implemented have been helpful in improving on the
living standard of residents in the Builsa North District through job creation, providing income and enhancing
infrastructure development notwithstanding certain implementation challenges. It is recommended that a clear-cut
national rural development policy or framework to prioritize the needs of rural areas is required. The framework should
set out the guiding principles and goals to address the socio-economic and infrastructural needs of the rural areas.
