Abstract
As per the World Health Organization (WHO), there are 2.3 billion overweight people aged
15 years, and over 700 million obese people worldwide in 2015. National Family Health Surveys in India
indicated an increase in obesity from 10.6% in 1998-1999 to 14.8% in 2005-06. with this background, the present
study was undertaken to study the obstetric & perinatal outcome in over weight / Obese (BMI ≥25kg/m²)
Pregnant women compared to women with normal BMI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a
Prospective cohort study done over a period of 2years at tertiary care government health facility in Hyderabad,
Telangana. A total of 100 singleton pregnant women with BMI ≥ 25Kg/m² were selected for study group and 100
Singleton pregnant women with normal BMI were selected for the control group. These two groups were
followed in to the delivery for the maternal and neonatal outcomes. RESULTS History of PCOD and
hypertensive disorders were higher in study group than the control group. There is an increase in incidence of
gestational diabetes mellitus, ceasrian sections, post dated deliveries, post operative fever and wound infection in
study group than control group at a statistically significant level. Neonates born in study group are having high
incidence of Macrosomia, NICU admisssions. CONCLUSION: The present study confirms that Obesity is a
Strong risk factor for complications in Pregnancy and adverse neonatal outcomes. Anything that can go wrong in
pregnancy is more likely to do so at a much higher levels in obese pregnancies. Obesity is a modifiable risk factor
to prevent complications of pregnancy and adverse neonatal Outcomes for health future generations. Women of
child bearing age and their healthcare providers should work together to assess and address this important health
issue before, during and after pregnancy.
