Abstract
This study sought to assess the challenges and opportunities of young
entrepreneurs in Nyarugenge District and the effect on the career success. Objectives
were to assess the level of perception of respondents on challenges of entrepreneurs in
terms of market opportunity, facilities and knowledge of entrepreneurs and their
perception on opportunities in terms of traits of entrepreneurs and environment and
then their perception on career success in terms of efficiency and effective business
and sustainability and growth. The study sought also to assess the level of significant
relationship between challenges and career success and the level of significant
relationship between opportunities and career success.
The study consisted of a descriptive and correlation research design. Data was
collected through primary data (questionnaires and individuals interviews) and
secondary data. The population of the study is 1,015 registered young entrepreneurs
of Nyarugenge Sector. 286 samples of respondents were randomly selected, only 154
returned the questionnaire. The data was then analyzed using SPSS. Frequencies,
percentages, mean, standard deviation and correlation coefficient were computed and
analyzed. The findings indicated that there are challenges that affect the success of
the business owned by young entrepreneurs in Nyarugenge District and opportunities
that are not used effectively. The findings further revealed that young entrepreneurs
possess ‘personal traits of entrepreneurs’ as opportunities which facilitate their career
success. The results of this study discovered that there is a significant relationship
between challenges and career success and there is a significant relationship between
opportunities and career success of young entrepreneurs in Nyarugenge District.
Based on the above findings recommendations were given.
