Abstract
This study assessed the perceptions of smallholder farmers on maize varieties available in Rwimbogo
Sector in Gatsibo District of the eastern Province in Rwanda. Data were collected on 96 smallholder
farmers (56% male and 44% female). Based on their experience, farmers have attributed local names
which reflect the characteristics of maize varieties put at their disposal. Results indicate that ZM607 and
Pool 19A (hybrids) and Nyirakagori (traditional variety) are the most grown maize varieties in the study
area with 47%, 27% and 19% of sample farmers respectively. ZM607 is highly appreciated for its high
yielding potential, high resistance to environmental shocks, considerable enthesis, and high taste. The
study findings suggest strengthening extension services as farmers tend to stick on local varieties.
