Abstract
This paper examines the history of the level and trend of fertility in South Africa in a comparative context. It considers how current fertility levels relate to people's fertility desires. Since people want surviving children rather than simply live births, it also examines the level of, and factors related to, infant survival. Household arrangements and the welfare of children are then examined, with the focus on orphan hood and child fostering. Finally, recommendations and observations are made.
