Abstract
Unemployment is a crucial issue in the analysis of the labor market. Their influence on
household income, quality of life and well-being of society is relevant. Moreover, the disparate
unemployment rates among cities show the heterogeneity and complexity of the labor market in
Colombia and for that reason the study of the behavior of the unemployment rate in Medellín, a
city with a boom and economic relevance, allows an approach to the dynamics of unemployment
in this city and the factors that influence unemployment. This paper contributes to the estimation
of the unemployment duration and the probability of stay unemployed in Medellín for the third
quarter of 2014. The results show an average length of unemployment greater than Bogotá
despite Medellín had been higher rates of economic growth. Women have longer duration than
men and head-household, married and people with master education have a higher probability of
leaving unemployment than those who are not.
