Abstract
Purpose: To determine the role of labor market segmentation on the levels of depreciation
of human capital. Mincer wage equations are estimated by segments according to some
extent the empirical proposal Neumann and Wisses; the data used are obtained from
Colombian labor market using the Great Integrated Household Survey (GEIH, initial in
Spanish) for the years 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015. Results: The main result is that
levels of depreciation of the most skilled workers and people working in economic sectors
or industries whose operations require a high technological content (modern segments) are
not more pronounced than those of less qualified individuals (traditional segments), refuting
the approaches erected around the external obsolescence on human capital. Originality:
This research is novel for several reasons: first, explores a relationship little discussed in
the academic tradition of international and national human capital, specifically the
relationship between segmentation and depreciation of human capital; and second
because it calculates the work experience in a way that captures the possibility of
accumulation of human capital in individuals who are toiling.
