This paper analyzes the process that has determined the relocation of coffee growing in
Colombia and evaluates the effect of this behavior on the welfare of coffee producers. For
this purpose, by taking into account the official secondary information database and
Information System of Coffee Producers (SICA) between 2007 and 2013, a spatial model
of panel data with fixed effects is estimated and the changes in the Living Condition Index
(ICV) of coffee growers are determined. It was found that the location of coffee follows a
spatial historical process where the opportunity costs of land and labor are factors of
ejection and attraction respectively. Statistically, this dynamic has generated significant
increases in the living conditions of coffee farmers who are part of a cluster of high
productivity.
