Abstract
This research analyzes the political economy of Uruguay from the beginning of the Frente Amplio
governments in 2005 to the present, contrasting it with the 1990-1999 period and focusing on labor.
Ruptures and continuities between both periods are studied in order to ascertain if a different
development model can be identified, using an approach akin to the régulation school. The
dimensions we study are: the productive strategy pursued by the State, the social policies
implemented by it, the socio-productive structure (based on the different activities the country
performs, and the quality of jobs), labor institutions, and the mode of external insertion. Results
indicate a continuation of the same model in both periods, although presently with a significant
improvement in labor quality and social indicators such as poverty levels and real wages.
