Onomastic is the discipline that examines the name of people (anthroponomy) and
the name of places (toponymy). This work has its focus on the geographical names
analysis, which means the names of places, villages, avenues, streets, alleys, squares,
mountains and rivers, and on the reasons of their origin.
The present study aims to be a valued contribution to a standardization regarding
the spelling of toponyms in the Benguela municipality. Not only to contribute to the sociocultural
History of the place itself - constitution of urban and rural space, settlement
procedures and local culture, to a better orientation and location, but also to encourage
the awareness of the names inscribed on name signs (in streets, avenues, villages, etc.)
and the right information about the reasons of each designation.
