Abstract
The consumption pattern revealed by baseline studies help in formulating energy policy as they provide useful
insights about fulfilling household demand effectively and efficiently. Household energy consumption of Dhulikhel
Municipality of Kavrepalanchowk District was studied by conducting a questionnaire survey, and was supported by
secondary data from various sources. Statistical analyses of data from survey reveal patterns of energy consumption.
The total energy consumption of 32 urban and semi-urban and 12 rural sampled households is 1843093 MJ per year.
The average energy consumption per capita is 5049.5 MJ per year. Total energy consumption of whole Dhulikhel
Municipality is 72123007.6MJ per year. Total energy consumption of sampled rural households is 8860.6MJ per
capita while total energy consumption of sampled urban households is 3783.8MJ per capita. Cooking is the most
energy intensive end use, accounting for 75% of urban and 90% of rural energy consumption, followed by electrical
appliances in urban areas and water heating in rural areas. Higher energy intensity in rural areas can be attributed to
use of inefficient technologies like biomass cook stoves. Carrying out baseline studies of energy consumption in
different places of Nepal can form a basis in formulating future energy policy as it helps in estimating energy
demand and identifying choices of end use technologies.
