Abstract
Background:Adolescents can experience many health problems, such as free sex, alcohol drinking, and
illicit drug use. There are several factors related to these behaviours, including knowledge, parenting and
exposure to printed and electronic media.
Objective:To identify the role of family, society and media in providing information about reproductive
health amongst students from FKIK UIN Jakarta.
Methods:This was a cross sectional study using a quantitative approach. Samples were 136 students from
FKIK UIN Jakarta.
Results:The results show that respondents consulted friends, mother, father, sibling, relative, health
workers, religious leaders, teachers or lectures regarding the issues of reproductive health. Majority of
respondents preferred asking their own friends than others. Approximately 40.4% respondents attended
social meetings about reproductive health. Of all respondents, only 21 (15.4%) respondents were aware of
the availability of organizations that focus on reproductive health, 14 (10.3%) respondents knew the
location of these organizations and only 6 (4.4%) respondents had visited them. Although information
about reproductive health can be found in printed and electronic media, only few respondents benefitted
from them.
Conclusions:We found the role of family, society and media in providing information about reproductive
health, although the role of friends was more dominant.
