Abstract
In Bangladesh, a homestead vegetable garden is an
integrated production system and a stable ecosystem that
maintains both the diversity of life and biological wealth. A
homestead vegetable garden is the main supply source for
vegetables, fuel wood, and fruits, and is also a reliable
source of additional household income (Fariduddin et al.
[1]). This additional income is generally utilized to
purchase supplementary food items, household goods,
chickens, medicines and for children’s education. A
homestead vegetable garden is especially important in
overcoming seasonal unavailability of foods and promoting
household self-sufficiency. It also helps to improve rural
nutrition. The dynamic role of home gardening in family
nutrition and household welfare must be assessed in the
context of the wider farming system and household economy.
This type of gardening is feasible for even the
poorest people since it relies on low-cost low-risk
technology.
