    Series Information

    Time use surveys are conducted:

    1. to measure and analyse time spent within daily and between daily activities to gain more insight on the productive and leisure activities of household members;
    2. to obtain information on the division of both paid and unpaid labour between women and men and other groupings;
    3. to learn more about the productive activities such as subsistence work, casual work and work in the informal sector and;
    4. to provide data to improve significantly the estimated contributions, to GDP and employment, of domestic services of household industry.

    In 2006, each month approximately 390 households, totally 5,070 households, were selected to implement Time Use Survey by Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT). 11,815 members of households aged 15 years and over were interviewed and were asked to complete two diaries -one for a weekday and one for a weekend day- by recording all of their daily activities during 24 hours at ten-minute- slots.

    The first data source of participation in cultural activities was launched with “Time Use Survey” which was conducted by the TURKSTAT in 2006. In this study; data on participation in cultural activities and time spent on cultural activities was tabulated by cultural domains and socio-economic characteristics of household and household members.

    Abstract

    Time Use Survey is the basic research for manifestation how people use their time in daily activities. The main target in the survey is carrying out large-scale household survey featuring self-completion diaries to measure the amount of time spent by the persons on various activities. It is possible to determine the disparities in terms of time spent according to several characteristics of individuals like gender, age group, employment status etc.

    The objectives of the survey:

    • to measure the daily activity patterns of Turkish people;
    • to identify differences in time-use patterns of different gender, age and socio-economic groups;
    • to collect data that improve GNDP estimates;
    • to collect data that make international comparisons on time-use possible.

    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

    The survey sampled the non-institutionalised population living within the borders of Turkey, and largely followed the Harmonised European Time Use Survey guidelines. A Population Sheet collected in a 2000 survey and updated in 2002 and a village schedule produced during the 2000 General Census served as sampling frames. A multi-stage stratified cluster sample of these sample frames produced lists of areas, canvassed to identify addresses, from which households were sampled.

    The survey collected household and person-level information with a face-to-face interview, and left behind two 24-hour diaries broken down into 10-minute time slots with participants. One diary was completed on a week day, and the other on a weekend day. Participants recorded main and secondary activities in their own words.

    Response Rate

    85.7% of sampled households participated to at least some degree; 91.5% of target people in sampled households returned both diaries.

    Weighting

    Weights correct for sample non-response and regional distribution of the sample.
