Abstract

The adolescent mother and her newborn cross a special situation that requires to be well-known by health services, through perinatales indicators that allow to support and pursuit to this binomial of risk. Objectives: To know the incidence births in adolescent mothers according to its age, civil state, condition of newborn, as well as to obtain perinatales indicators: indices of cesarean delivery, prematurity, low birth weight (LBW) and very low birth weight (VLBW), late fetal mortality (LFMR), perinatal mortality rate (PMR), neonatal mortality rate (TMN), in the population taken care of in Instituto Especializado Materno Perinatal
(IEMP) of Lima during year 2003.
Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective study was made. The studied population was the total of births children of adolescent mothers (3,141). Groups were satisfied according to the age of the mother and it was compared with the group of non-adolescent. The association of qualitative variables was evaluated with Chi-squared test, considering like p value significant < 0.001. The force of association between the adolescents and the non-adolescent ones, was calculated by means of the odds ratio with its respective interval of confidence to 95%. The statistical program used was Epi info 3.32. The results are shown in tables and graphics.
Results: In the IEMP during 2003, incidence of births in children of adolescent mothers was 17.6%. The 62.9% of mothers of 11 to 14 years are unmarried and in the group of 15 to 19 years the 64.4% are convivientes (definided as a couple that live together but are not married). The greater index of cesarean delivery was in the non-adolescent mothers (39.9%) and in the group of 11 to 14 years 37.1%, in this last group appeared the greater frequency of born-death (3.2%), the greater newborn indices of premature infants, LBW and VLBW and NMR the global more discharge (33.7 by 1,000 live births). Their newborns between 500 to 999 g, died before the 24 hours of life, whereas in the group of 15 to 19 years for the same weight all died during the first week of life. PMR, LFMR, precocious and global NMR of = 1,000 g, they were discreetly greater in the group of children of non-adolescent.
