Abstract
Climate change is one of the most important global environmental challenges facing humanity with implications for food production, natural ecosystems, freshwater supply and health, etc. The climate change issue is part of the greater challenge of sustainable development. Climate change poses particularly difficult challenges for India. India is a large developing country with nearly 700 million population, directly depending on climate-sensitive sectors (agriculture, forests and fisheries) and natural sources (water, biodiversity, mangroves, coastal zones and grasslands) for their subsistence and livelihoods. Urban India has about 30 percent of population and expected to grow over 800 million by next 50 years. This paper presents impacts of climate change in the India, especially municipal solid waste generation. Citizens are already facing adverse impact of climate change, which is evenly spread throughout the country and mostly to vulnerable citizens. In the shed light of 'National Action Plan on Climate Change in India' the municipal solid waste management sector is assessed and suggestions have been made for mitigation and adaptation strategies.
