Abstract
Total 53% of the coastal areas are affected by salinity and the coastal areas cover almost one third of the total land of Bangladesh. The boom of shrimp culture, although was the bread and butter for the economic development, has appeared as the white knuckles setting a link with the increase of salinity in the coastal region of Bangladesh. It is apparently undeniable the fact that shrimp business basically started growing with a cracking pace over the last two decades.. Against the significant contribution of shrimp business to rural economic development, there exists a dilapidated portrait of the coastal region like the sore thumb distinctly projecting the increasing chronic poverty gap between the muscle man and the marginal poor along with many societal and cultural conflicts.
Looking in to the extent of correlation between shrimp business and the increase of salinity in the coastal regions, the study would focus on chalking up the several dimensions of impacts of salinity on environment, livelihoods and culture as compensation for the economic gain. The scarcity of drinkable water in the coastal region has already been so acute that the upcoming future has no clear indication for the way out. Acres and acres of land up to horizon are now neither productive for shrimp culture nor fertile for any agricultural production got in the process to be left barren and the severe ecological damage is seemingly found to be calamitous than it was even predicted as to be. On the contrary, the economic gain in true sense has gained unthinkable poverty gap demolishing the middle classes between rich and hardcore poor families.
The study revealed that 5% of the families in the study area were economically boosted taking thebenefit of salinity in shrimp business, socio economic conditions have declined for 79% marginal agricultural farmers and unchanged situation was detected for 17%. Almost 90% of the marginal farmers urged for aman rice production through protection of saline water.
