Abstract
Due to its location in the central-south of Romania, to the quality of its natural and
social environment and, not least, to the functional complementarity between the piedmont
area, on one hand, and the industrial urban areas in its proximity, on the other, Cândesti
Piedmont (903 km2
) has a series of assets.
The presence, evolution and dynamics of rural settlements in the piedmont space were
impacted by a variety of factors:
1. Natural factors played an important role in the establishment of settlements in
Cândesti Piedmont. Their location was not randomly chosen. A long time before being
established, a whole complex of physico-geographical, economic, social-political and
historical factors had influenced the region.
1.1. The relief proved propitious to the creation of settlements, usually grouped into
valley passages and the large interfluves from the south, which concentrated more than 90%
of all the rural network. The other piedmont units (hills in the north) and the terraces (at the
contact with the valleys) are often restrictive to habitation, also presenting the greatest
geomorphological risks. The relief fragmentation and, in the north, also the great energy of
the relief, the north-south orientation of the valleys and of the road and railway connections
on the east-west line, the difficult communication on this line are the greatest disadvantages of
Cândesti Piedmont.
