Abstract
Since the opening of the Central and eastern European markets after the fall of the Iron
Curtain in 1989, multinational enterprises (MNEs) started to enter these markets. Due to
political instability, the former Yugoslavian country Serbia is one of the last countries that
started with a transition towards democracy and a market economy. Working hard on
governmental reforms and the legal framework, Serbia has currently applied for EU
membership and stands open for foreign direct investment.
On the basis of an extensive country profile, literature and statistical research and a field
research conducted with Dutch companies operating in Serbia, recommendations will be
presented for multinationals who want to enter the Serbian market.
