Abstract
The main objective of the article is to present wood biomass potentials and to present new opportunities for further development of biomass sector in Slovenia. Slovenia is a country with a lot of forest (nearly 60 % of land is covered with forests) and with traditional use of wood for heating and cooking. Share of wooden biomass in primary energy in Slovenia is only 4% but wood biomass was and still is an important source of energy for rural population and especially for forest owners. According to results from population census in 2002 around 35 % of apartments in Slovenia are still heated with wood as only, primary or secondary fuel. This data confirm our theory that wood biomass is important source for energy in households but it is less important in industry and in bigger biomass systems. The main characteristics of present biomass use are: old technologies for biomass preparation and use, low efficiency and high emissions of CO2. To implement new technologies and to increase use of biomass also in bigger systems like district heating systems, CHP and in industry, the estimation of wood biomass potentials is crucial.
