Objective: The age of onset of menopause and vasomotor symptoms can be influenced by
various sociodemographic factors and lifestyl. This study was aimed to describe differences in the age
of onset of menopause and vasomotor symptoms. Mehods: This cross-sectional study, data from post
menopausale women around 40-60 years old in Babol, northern Iran were enrolled. The study
population included all the women who had attained natural menopause and those who had their
last menstrual bleeding at least 2 to 7 years prior to the data collection. The cluster sampling method was
adopted and 20 clusters were randomly. A face to face household interview was done. Results: A total
of 700 post-menopausal women were enrolled in the study. The mean age (±SD) of participants and age at
normal menopause were 52.92±2.5 and 49.02±2.3 years respectively. Marital status, education, abortion
and age of menarche, are statistically significant associated with age of normal menopause and age at
menopause, education, marital status, abortion and duration of menopause were independent factors
affecting the vasomotor symptoms of postmenopausal women in our study. Conclusion: In this study,
age of normal menopause was 49.02 years and the frequency of the women reported hot flashes, night
sweats and sweating were 65%, 74%, 96% respectively which only education, marital status, abortion and
duration of menopause were independent factors affecting the vasomotor symptoms of postmenopausal
women.
