Abstract
My objective is to explore some of the more obvious linkages as well as the nature of the interrelationship between political democracy and economic development in the context of South Africa. Little attempt will be made to draw general lessons from the South African experience but I hope that the insights that emerge from a better understanding of the nature of the peculiar South African situation will help to illuminate these issues in a global context.
