This study aims to analyse the caracteristics and determinants of the youth labour market outcomes
in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. For this analysis, we use 2007 Child Labor Survey (CLS) conducted
by the Department of Statistics of Jordan in collaboration with ILO-IPEC. We show that even though there
is no gender gap in the youth education level, gender-related differences still remain significant in the labour
market participation. Due to the lack of new job opportunities or the consistency between the outcomes of the
educational system and the needs and requirements of the labour market, a higher level of education does not
necessarily protect individuals from unemployment. Consequently, the discouragement among the young people
appears to be particularly an important reason to not seeking work.
