Abstract
The ability to promote “global mindedness” in the social studies is often restricted by
teachers’ own personal experiences and beliefs. The value of overseas travel and study tours
in empowering teachers to promote a global perspective is well established (Wilson, 1982,
1983, 1993a, 1993b; Germain, 1998; Kirkwood, 2002). This article is a reflection on a two-week
study tour of Germany, of which I was a member in the summer of 2013. Sponsored by the
Transatlantic Outreach Program, I visited German schools, met with German social studies
teachers, and was exposed to the German commitment to national memory. This article
promotes the value of such experiences for teachers in development and promotion “globalmindedness”
in their own classes and recommends the incorporation of elements of German
sozial thinking into our concept of moral citizenship.
