Abstract
This paper describes the growth and characteristics of peri-urban settlements in Kano metropolis and through
direct field observation examined the current domestic waste water disposal practices in such settlements.
The paper contended that appropriate systems of waste water management for the collection and disposal of
domestic waste water are non existent in peri-urban settlements of Kano metropolis and by means of
content analysis of existing domestic waste water technologies and management practices in similar
environments assess the opportunities for implementing waste water management systems based on
localized approach that offer opportunities for improvements in local environmental health conditions. The
paper further discusses the operational sustainability of technologies for waste water management and their
associated management requirements in peri urban areas. The paper argued that localized approaches offer
increased opportunities for local stakeholder participation in planning and decision-making, and emphasizes
the importance of building the capacity of local organizations in all aspects of localized waste water
management. The paper concluded that a concerted effort is required to overcome the constraints that
hinder the implementation and sustainability of localized waste water systems, and proposes a framework for
achieving this goal
