Abstract
The intrauterine device (IUD) is the most commonly used reversible method of contraception worldwide and the only long-term reversible method available in Viet Nam. Despite the reliance on IUDs in Viet Nam, 12.5% of Vietnamese women discontinue IUD use within 12 months of insertion, 1 and contraceptive options are limited. Contraceptive discontinuation contributes to an estimated 28-52% of unintended pregnancies in developing countries, 2 and may serve as one of the driving forces behind the fact that Viet Nam has one of the highest abortion rates in the world (26 abortions per 1,000 women of reproductive age 3 ). Despite the availability of legal and safe induced abortion, unsafe abortions account for an estimated 11% of the direct causes of maternal mortality. 4 In order to improve women’s health and facilitate the achievement of desired family sizes, Viet Nam must strengthen its family planning programme to improve contraceptive continuation and reduce the burden of unwanted fertility.
