This research presents the reasons why some women in the city of Medellín decide not to
have children. The resignification of motherhood, the struggle for emancipation, the
capacity of agency and the obtaining of rights have been fundamental elements in the
choice of not being mothers. In spite of multiple questions about their choice, the women
participating in this research defend their position and demonstrate that motherhood is
not the only way for women to feel fulfilled. In the light of feminist theory, the research
data are analyzed, and it is evident that these small struggles have also allowed to question
the defined roles of men and women in society.
