Target: to determine, from the perspective of the Colombian health system, the cost- effectiveness of zinc, as a new tool for the prevention
of Severe Diarrheal Disease (SDD) in children younger than 5 years old.
Methodology: A decision tree was used to simulate the scenarios of using and not using zinc for SDD prevention. Information about
its effectiveness was extracted from metanalisis done by the authors, as well as international literature. Specific data for Colombia was
taken from national and local studies. To determine the costs in Colombia we built a typical case from national attention protocols,
clinical records and Colombian tariff tables. Finally, we performed robustness checks to estimate the effect of changes in costs and effectiveness
of the strategies in the model.
