Abstract
This study is based on data collected from two sample surveys of 300
households of normal users and 400 households of biogas users. Detailed
information of energy consumption pattern of altogether 700 rural
households is given here. Classification of energy data on Likert scale has
ensured the reduction in ambiguity of response of the interviewee.
Pretesting of the questionnaire and trainings to the interviewer ensured the
quality of data collected. The resulting categorical data are modeled here by
polytomous models. This has resulted in minute analysis of dynamics of
change of various variables governing the pattern of energy consumption in
normal users and biogas users. These variables are namely time spent in the
collection of firewood, type of house, amount of firewood saved, time saved,
employer and school located within 15 min distance. Odds ratio and relative
risks are used in quantifying the impact of change with respect to energy
consumption. Several benefits related to a switch over to biogas including
reduction in greenhouse gas emission have been analyzed. Thus evidence
based analysis of dynamics of improvement in lives of people when biogas is
used as an energy source for cooking is done. Such studies are very crucial
for country like Nepal which lacks a strong backbone of accurate and
regularly updated official records. The results obtained here are not only
specific to Nepal but can also be generalized to other least developed
country in Asia and Africa.
