Nepal is one of the lowest energy consuming countries in the world. More than 80% of total
energy consumed here comes from traditional biomass energy resources including agriculture
residue, forests, by-products from crops etc. These types of energy consumptions not only
make impact on environmental degradation and ecological imbalance but also have adverse
effect on women health and economic status of people living in rural areas. Biogas is
becoming popular in the villages as an alternative source of energy. In this context, the
present study on the impact of biogas on women health and rural development addresses
various factors of biogas use. The main objective of the study was to examine the health and
environment impact of biogas on women as well as its impact on rural economy.
This study was conducted in Itahara VDC of Morang district. The study was based on a
sample of 60 households (40 of biogas users and 20 non-users), selected through simple
random sampling. Before starting the study, a brief review of existing literature was made.
Analysis of the data was made by summary statistics. The data showed a relationship between
biogas plants with workloads, timesavings, women health and economy of rural areas.
