Abstract
Ending poverty is the first of the sustainable development goals of the UN. Hence, the nature of multidimensional poverty must be understood to guide effective poverty alleviation policies. In this paper, we used several regression models to find the effects of employment, household- and community-related variables on household poverty, measured via the multidimensional poverty index (MPI). The authors used the indicators, weights, and methods used in Balisacan (2015) to generate the household level MPI. Our results indicate that being employed decreases MPI but length and nature of employment add to the MPI. Also, the number of young and old dependents contributes to the MPI. Community public goods, as well as remittances, decrease the MPI. Several non-robust variables were also identified using BACE. Based on these results, we conclude that employment, household and public goods significantly contribute to the poverty of the household. Evidence suggests, however, that priority through uplifting policy measures should be given more to laborers who are working for different employers than contractual workers if the aim is to reduce MPI.
