Abstract
There are two objectives of this chapter. First, the migration and remittance literature is reviewed to examine the contribution of migrant remittances to socialdevelopment at different spatial scales. Of specific interest is how remittances from migration allow income diversification at the household level to create social and economic opportunities. Second, the chapter draws on the notion of social resilience to describe and explain the role of remittances in enabling migrant households to develop a wider range of strategies for coping with, mitigating, and absorbing shocks and stresses. The notion of social resilience, which forms the conceptual foundation of the book, focuses specifically on households and household responses to problems, while allowing the flexibility that accommodates a range of responses and degrees of success in coping.
