Abstract
A survey was carried out in the broad context of integrating traditional know ledge of the rural
populace and that of the potential technology available through experimentation into the uses
of sorghum and millets. The participatory rural appraisal (PRA) method was used in the
survey of nine villages. They were chosen according to their ability to produce and consume
these grains. The PRA method puts the farmers frrst on issues affecting them. The result of
the survey shows that subsistence farmers practised mainly crop rotation and planned mixed
cereals. Sampled farmers preferred to plant sorghum varieties like 'segaolane', 'phofu' or
'town' respectively and 'serere 6A' variety for that of millet. Both men and women were
involved in cereal production. Most of the millets were processed and consumed within the
household, while some sorghum was sold. A list of collected cereal-based foods are discussed
in the light of their traditional processes and quality for income generating activities.
