Abstract
Shelter is a basic human need next only to food and clothing. At the end of the 10th Five Year Plan, the housing shortage is estimated to be 24.7 million. However, urban areas in our country are also characterized by severe shortage of basic services like potable water, well laid out drainage system, sewerage network, sanitation facilities, electricity, roads and appropriate solid waste disposal. Health and housing are depend each other, bad housing seriously affect the health condition of the people. Only 48.74 per cent houses are pucca and their condition is very bad for living. Sanitation conditions are also saw very poor picture,
only 50.09 per cent houses have the formal toilet facilities. This is the very backward region in the west Bengal.
