Labor Force Survey [hh/lfs]
The ILO migration survey project consists of two components: “intensive” and “extensive,” and includes more than twenty participating countries. Country selection was based on a wide-range of migration experiences and Armenia was one of a small number of countries selected to participate in the “intensive” version of the project. The mission of the “intensive” group is aimed at pre-testing a number of questions proposed by ILO, which can be added to periodically conducted household surveys (e.g. labour force surveys), evaluation of these pre-tests, and sharing the results with other countries involved in the project. The goal of the ILO project is to develop migration questions which effectively measure various dimensions of labour migration and can be permanently added to household surveys.
Since it would be difficult for NSS RA to secure information on 300-500 migrants or households with migrants on the current cycle of its labour force survey, with bilateral collaboration with ILO, it was deemed more expedient to carry out an independent household survey with more sample, instead of adding the proposed model-questionnaire to the labour force survey questionnaire.
As a result, this project intends to develop international labour migration statistics according to the following directions:
1. To improve the quality of collected migration data, through the use of “tested” questions which could be effectively used by many countries to enable the evaluation of labour migration, mainly from the standpoint of monetary and in-kind transfer sender-receiver relationships.
2. To ensure international dialogue concerning migration statistics, as well as data comparability.

Sample survey data [ssd]
A multi-level stratified random sample was designed for implementation of the survey. The sample is nationally representative of different geographical and socio-economic situations of the Republic of Armenia. Based on the eleven regional (Marz) administrative and territorial distributions of RA, preliminary sampling units were chosen in corresponding strata according to household proportion. The RA 2001 Population census was used to calculate these proportions. The survey was conducted in 36 urban and 31 rural settlements from 11 Marzes of the republic.
The original survey sample comprised of 1500 households. Because non-response was expected a reserve sample of about 500 households was also selected, using the same methods as for the original sample. Otherwise, collecting information on 300-500 migrants or households with migrants might be in danger, thus it would be impossible to implement the project goal.
