ShahellShahelNADAShahellDepartment of Planning - Principal StatisticianAgricultural Survey [ag/oth]This information is collected yearly on Area ,Yield and Production on both crops and livestock.Version 1.1 (Final dataset) Edited non anonymized dataset, for internal use only. The information on crop production and livestock dominance of the agriculture sector in the economy of the Gambia makes it inevitable that the sector is made a primary target for all economic and social developmental efforts undertaken by the government and other planners and policy makers. However the absence, paucity and unreliability of essential agricultural data required for policy, planning, programming and monitoring of appropriate activities in the sector has hampered efforts at constructive and realistic development planning. It is thus vital that an agricultural statistical database be established urgently to provide reliable data and information with which to accurately plan the implementation of developmental measures.
To achieve the above-mentioned objective, an annual survey (NASS) has to be conducted.Gambia, TheThe National Agricultural Sample Survey covered entire country except two zones of Greater Banjul areas.Households.Households, who were engaged in growing crops and/or breeding and raising livestocks in private or in partnership with others in the selected sample.Sample survey data [ssd]The scope of crops and livestock in the survey included: - Identification particulars: Geographic area information; Holder sex, education status family size and type of holding - crop, livestock population and livestock products.Department of PlanningThe overall sample design includes the choice of a frame, choice of sampling units, determination of the sample size, development of the selection procedure, preparation of estimators and their sampling errors and an analysis of the results. In this programme the use of EAs as primary sampling units (PSU) was advocated and these EAs corresponded with those used in the Population Census. In the past, the Enumeration Areas used by the ASRE were different from those of the CSD and this made comparability and other cross-classifications and related studies difficult. The sample selection was done in a manner that enabled the determination of the probability of each unit in the sample. These probabilities were used as weights to form the estimates.
The secondary sampling units (SSU) were dabadas, (clusters of households) found within the EAs. Within a selected EA, all dabadas are listed and those that are agricultural were identified. This list of identified households then constituted the list of holders from which a systematic random sample was selected for further enumeration.Face-to-face [f2f]The questionnaire is organized in to four parts:
Part 1: listing of households within the selected areas. This part provides the frame for the selection of the sample households.
Part 2: Identification particulars: This part contains area identification of the selected household. It dealt with area identification of respondents such as Region, settlementss, Enumeration area household number, holder number, and type of holding.
Part 3: Area measurementLi: This part of the questionnaire dealt with number of cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and mules by age and purpose; production of poultry and ; livestock diseases, treatment and vaccination; and livestock feeds used. The questionnaire used in the field for data collection purpose was prepared in English.
Part 4: Yield measument. This part captures yield crop cutted from the plots.Field Organization: The entire 3 branch statistical offices of the DOP participated in the survey undertaking, especially in organizing the second stage training, in deploying the field staff to their respective sites of assignment, and retrieving completed questionnaires and submitting them to the head office for data processing. They were also responsible in administering the financial and logistic aspect of the survey within the areas of their assignment. In the data collection of the survey, a total of 37 enumerators and10 field supervisors were involved. To complish the data collection operation, all the enumerators were supplied with the necessary survey equipment at the completion of the training. To assist the data collection activities in deployment, supervision, and retrieval of completed questionnaires, reasonably adequate 3-fourwheel vehicles were used.
In this survey, most of the data/information is obtained by direct investigation through: (a) the interview method in which answers were solicited from respondents and (b) physical measurements of fields and weighing of produce in order to obtain estimates of hectarage, yields and production respectively.
At the end of the annual training course for enumerators/supervisors, they were posted to their areas of work in May and commenced work immediately on arrival in their respective Enumeration Areas (EAs).In the data collection of the survey, a total of 37 enumerators and 10 field supervisors were involved. To accomplish the data collection operation, all the enumerators were supplied with the necessary survey equipment at the completion of the training. To assist the data collection activities in deployment, supervision, and retrieval of completed questionnaires, reasonably adequate 3-wheel vehicles were used.A total of 74 Enumeration Areas (EAs) were selected to be covered by the survey, EAs. As regards, the ultimate sampling unit, it was planned to conduct the survey on 69,140 agricultural households.Estimation procedure for totals and ratios and their sampling errors can only be accessed in the Annex table.Department of PlanningUse of the dataset must be acknowledged using a citation which would include:
